I have used the following technique to utilize QTP for READ only access:

SET LOCK FILE UPDATE
RUN RUN-NAME-HERE
ACCESS FILEXYZ
SET FILE FILEXYZ OPEN

This worked for me under version 7.29.  In my notes, I had written the
following with this:

Both SET statements are needed.
A DBOPEN MODE 5, the default is inferred after the 2nd SET statement is
issued.  I think this means that since it does not say 'SET FILE FILEXYZ
OPEN 5', it is inferred.
