I think this is the correct (only?) method: it's certainly the one we use.
On VMS at least, the subfiles are temporary files, rather than memory
structures, but they only last until you exit Powerhouse.

We adopt a naming convention, so that .qts & .qzs are obliged to have the same
source name if they're mutually dependent, so that we can build everything
separately.

The only bug I'm aware of that causes subfile mismatches like this is with the
recent indexed subfile feature: works ok with interpreted code, but requires
"set nosubfile" between quiz exec statements as a workaround. Don't know if
this bug exists on your platform, or if it's relevant.
