Failure of Select with data conversion error

Sounds reasonable.
"Data conversion error" has long been a real pain though: it's impossible to
know whether there's a problem or not, and a tedious manual chore hacking up
complex reports to trace what's incurring the error. It would be nice if
we could optionally get a log of which item or line has failed, or something.
