G'day James
If you customer needs something up and running in a hurry, then why not use
PowerHouse 8.11C instead of Axiant. I'm not knocking Axiant, but so-called
client-server apps take MUCH longer to design, build and test than non C/S
apps. I believe you could get them up and running in a fraction of the time
it would take for Axiant. You can tell them it's a prototype and the GUI
stuff will come later.
PowerHouse Client would also be faster to use than Axiant and still give the
client a somewhat GUI L&F.
There is also the PowerHouse Web option which means you can do without the
Axiant client and develop using somewhat familiar traditional PH syntax.
What are your customer's priorities?

Subject: Axiant and MS SQL 7
I have been seconded to one of our clients that is in serious
difficulty with their business systems. Essentially they have none.
They have made a considerable investment in MS SQL 7 and the
hardware to run it and the development tools to write C++ and VB
code but they have nothing to show for this expenditure (which now
exceeds several $100,000.00's)
I have contacted Cognos regarding using Axiant to bootstrap their
essential systems onto the SQL servers as quickly as possible.
What I would like to hear from are those of you that have used
Axiant in production and development.
What I am looking for is information on how scalable this product
is when using NT Sever 4 and MS SQL and how well the current
release interfaces with SQL 7, if at all. I am intimately familiar
with PH 7.29 on MPE/iX platforms and I understand that the code
syntax for PH8 and Axiant are very similar to PH 7.29 on HP-MPE.
Can anyone comment on this and point out any "yes but" situations
to me before I run into them in development?
I am given to understand that Axiant (PH8) uses DBLIB for SQL
access. As this has been depreciated by MS since the last release
of SQL 6.5 I would like to know whether Cognos has any plans to
move Axiant to ADO and if so in what time frame.
Regards,
Jim
