VAM files -- thanks!

Thanks to all that replied to the VAM files question.  I eventually resolved
the problem by declaring the file as follows:

File ACKPRINT                                                     &
   Organization DIRECT                                             &
   Ascii                                                           &
   NOCREATE                                                        &
   Open ACKPRINT                                                   &
   Description "MPE MESSAGE FILE WHICH HOLDS ORDER          "      &
               "ACKNOWLEDGEMENT PRINT/REPRINT REQUESTS      "
 
   Record ACKPRINT                         Nocreate                &
     Description "MPE MESSAGE FILE WHICH HOLDS ORDER          "    &
                 "ACKNOWLEDGEMENT PRINT/REPRINT REQUESTS      "
     Item ORDER-NUM                                                &
       Datatype CHARACTER         Size     8
    etc.
    etc.
