Index segments must be char ?

You don't mention your OS, or PH version.
OpenVMS RMS supports all types of keys, but segmented keys are a feature
restricted to char type. So your key can be one integer, one date, or any
number of char strings, but not two integers or dates (although you can use a
powerhouse dictionary redefine to get around this somewhat).
Does that answer the question at all ? If not, please clarify.
