Hi Conrad

Thanks for your input to this discussion on PH and Linux.

So far we have been approached by very few customers (or
prospective
customers) inquiring about the availability of
PowerHouse on Linux. Part of
this may be due to the lack of leading relational
databases on the platform.

Oracle, Sybase - who else do you need?

And if we were to port PowerHouse and PowerHouse Web to
Linux which variant
should it be -- Red Hat Linux, OpenLinux, Slackware,
Debian GNU/Linux,
S.u.S.E. Linux, or one of the other Linux products?
While binary
incompatibilities between these variants may be rare
that is little comfort
to a customer experiencing problems on OpenLinux if we
have only built and
tested our products on Red Hat Linux.

Why not ask Linus Torvolds his opinion? His is the
originator and main proponent of Linux after all. I understand he is
quite open to suggestions and questions about his 'baby'.

I think the main drivers of any ADT are the programmers
and analysts out there creating systems. I think Cognos has been very
remiss in not having more dialog and interaction with these people.
There growth of Linux is being driven by programmers, not the clients
who buy the expensive PH licenses. But these programmers are VERY
influential in client's decisions on what tools to bring in house.

Visual Basic's popularity is driven by this model.
Microsoft knows this and therefore makes VB available at low cost to
developers. Unfortunately, Cognos typically prices its products out of
the reach of the average programmer. I can't afford to spend $3,500 on
a copy of Axiant. PowerBuilder does the same thing and I can get the
enterprise version, including sybase, for under $2,000. I can get an
enterprise version of VB for under a $1,000.

		Thanks for listening.

		Blue
