"Get away with" is exactly it. You're right about the record size not
changing and the new fields not referenced meaning that there's no external
syntactical reference to error out. However, PowerHouse, like all good 4GLs,
does a lot in the background. Like initializing items before using them. All
those items you did not reference get initialized the old way. Security may
also be an issue. If you've got a SELECT option on an item, it can affect
your retrieval. Need I go on? This is why we say to recompile if you change
a file. This is also why Customer Support often asks if the problem still
occurs when you recompile. They're not being frivolous.
