set page image (newbie question)

Do I understand correctly that you cannot use page images if you are using
footing at <sort-key>? If so, why not? And what are some ways to get around
this to print 3-column labels at the footing. Otherwise, I suppose I could
create a subfile to do my subtotals and counts, but is that the only
solution?
