The trailing ELSE's are redundant and inefficient (so I believe & so the Cognos
folks have said in the past).

You can rely on character items being spaces if they aren't initialised to
anything else, and similarly date/numeric items being zero.

Also "" = " " = "  " etc: character strings are truncated / space padded as
necessary to fit.
