Mark, you're right, the SET FILE ... UPDATE is not for Rdb. 
 
Steve, the primary file is ONLY being used for read.  I.e. it is not 
referenced in the OUTPUT statement.  We already have the order of  
 
RUN x 
COMMIT AT n TRANSACTIONS 
REQUEST a 
ACCESS filename LINK TO filename2 
SET FILE filename OPEN READ SHARE 
SUBFILE subfile .... 
 
REQUEST b 
ACC *subfile LINK to filename3 
OUTPUT filename3 
 
Processing is done in batch mode.
