VARCHAR2 and CHAR types

It's been quiet lately so I will post a question that hopefully someone can
help me on.
We are a software development shop working mostly on HP-UX systems and
Oracle running PH 733d3. We have a customer who wants us to convert our
char type declarations to VARCHAR2 to support another application. For
those of you who don't know, VARCHAR2 are variable length string
declarations stored within the Oracle database.
There are a number of implications of this move which we should or should
not worry ourselves over....
1) what will string comparisons between char and varchar2 fields result in
2) retrieval of records using combinations of varchar2 fields
3) subfiles storing varchar2 fields (variable length files?)
4) and the list goes on.....
I have heard rumors that Oracle will be dropping support of the char type
declaration, so this could be hitting home a lot sooner than we like.
Has anybody else experienced this conversion? I would appreciate any
experiences and/or suggestions you may have had.
Thanks,
Peter Watt
