Open or closed subsription?

To all:

Powerh-l@lists.swau.edu is currently a closed list in that posts are
restricted to subscribers only.  One of those subscribers is an
address at american.edu, which allows powerh-l@lists.swau.edu list
traffic to show up on the newsgroup bit.listserv.powerh-l  

This creates a problem when a newsgroup reader wants to contribute to the 
discussion on the list.  When he posts a newsgroup message, the message is 
posted to the newsgroup and is forwarded by american.edu to powerh-l. 
The message gets bounced because the "from" is not listed as a subscriber.

Here's the question:  Should the newsgroup remain as a read-only lurking
forum or should the list be OPEN to any posts? Being OPEN will allow 
the newsgroup, and also spammers, access to the list.

Being CLOSED has prevented several spams since the list was moved
to lists.swau.edu

Should the list be open or remain closed?
