Reading indexed subfiles in QTP

After upgrading to MPE/iX 5.5 express 4, I have found that
Accessing an indexed subfile with QTP (7.29.C3) had become
unacceptably, excruciatingly slow.  (In the range of only 250
records/minute on a 997/300!)  The output's going to another
subfile, but with no indexes.  While QUIZ has no problem, even
the following bare-bones test moved like molasses with QTP:

ACCESS *INDXFILE
SUBFILE NEWFILE KEEP INCLUDE INDXFILE

(INDXFILE is KSAMXL, created by QUIZ, and has only one index.)

There is obviously some kind of bug/incompatability here.  Any
ideas?
