Because that's the way it is. Please read the syntax definition for   
"conditions". A condition is one of a logical function, a logical   
expression or a predefined condition. And a logical expression has the   
form "operand operator expression" where operand is one of: string,   
number, record item, temp item, defined item or system function. Note   
that operand cannot be an expression.
