Thanks for the suggestions Steve. 
 
We can't use normal SFDs as we are migrating from v6.10e on VMS to v8.13 on 
HP/UX and we get a subfile format error when trying to read 'normal'
subfiles. 
 We tried setting the subfile format type but to no avail.  This is why we 
resorted to using portable subfiles. 
 
Manually editing affected PSD files is are planned approach but it is a poor 
one.  We identified over 180 elements with long names, each of these may 
appear in more than one PSD.
