How to calculate the Offsets in a file format

I'm trying to reproduce the Qshow format for a record, adding detail on
the elements.  The elements aren't a problem, but I'm having a hard time
calculating the "Offset" for each element; can you help?

The Record Contents of Qshow look like this:

Item              Type     Size    Offset

Field1          CHARACTER    8        0
Field2          CHARACTER   10        8  ... etc.

How can I calculate the Offset and associate each Offset with the
corresponding field?

(I think the Offset is supposed to be a field in the Architect data base
that I'm using, but all the values are the same and screwy, so I have to
calculate them.)
