<font size=2 face="sans-serif">This is also a personal opinion and not
an IBM recommendation. I personally prefer TextPad but be aware of
one limitation; it will only open files up to 2 gig in size. Certainly
good enough for any PH program, but I often find that I have to deal with
flat file data and there it can become an issue. I also have UltraEdit
and it doesn't have a file size limit that I have found. TextPad is easier
to use and it is usually my choice but UltraEdit has more power/features
so I keep in in reserve (plus I bought a lifetime upgrade version about
10 years ago so it's easy to keep around.)</font>
<br>
<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">I would also recommend that whatever
editor you use, make sure you can do column editing. I find this
very useful when working with data files. It lets you select a range
of columns through a range of rows without selecting the rest of the row.
This can be a real benefit if you have to, for example, comment out
20 lines of code or insert a remove columns 30-34 in all rows. Both
TextPad and UltraEdit have this feature. In TextPad they call it
'Block Select Mode' and in UltraEdit they call it 'Column Mode'.</font>

I used TextPad <br>
for years at Cognos. Someone had done a PowerHouse syntax colouring <br>
template, but it wasn't kept up to date. I remember comparing text <br>
editors, and for me that was the best. Your mileage may differ.<br>

I have used several editors over the last 25 years and I finally gave in
<br>
to using a windows version of VI about 10 years ago.<br>
<br>
The Product is VIM and it is a free product<br>
<br>
It is more powerful than the VI editor on Unix/Linux. The editor
has code <br>
coloring, I programmed all the powerhouse keywords into VIM, so I can see
<br>
syntax errors as I am typing (I can send you this).<br>
<br>
The best part is, with one editor you can work on Windows/Unix and Linux.<br>

<br>
I'm starting on a small lift-and-shift from 3000 to Windows. Does anyone
<br>
have any suggestions for a coding editor alternative to 'notepad' ? I have
<br>
used slickedit before, but that is somewhat more expensive than I can <br>
justify. What have listers used that they can recommend?<br>
<br>
Thanks<br>
